Metadata
Structured set of information used to describe a resource.

Description
Describing a resource, wether it's in digital form (web document, photography, sound file, etc.) or not (book, spreadsheet etc.) results in a data series. We call "metadata" data describing data. This data about data is particularly applicable to web pages. We can clearly want to encode some essential information on pages : title, author, date, keywords, etc.. Metadata can help organize a collection of resources (internal inventory) and discover resources (search engines). As part of research, metadata associated with a resource may also allow users to better judge the relevance of results.
