Web site positioning

What's the difference between search engines
and directories ?

The major difference between a search engine and a directory resides in the maner that they index and rank information.

The search engines is a data base composed of robots (computer programs) that travel the web and gather information. The size of the data base is much bigger than the one of the directory. The order orpositioning on the search engine is the result of a search made by a surfer's request and is defined by a ranking algorithm. Example: Google.

The directory is managed manually by humans. Each registration of an internet site on a directory is analyzed by someone responsible and ranked according to a predetermined category order and ranked alphabetically or a form of ranking pre-established by people managing the directory. Exemple: Canada Web Directory.
